Abandoning slow auto-docking in favour of manual docking I made it with seconds to spare, and only minor damage to my ship from a rough landing, achieving my goal of peace with the Paranids in the process. This involved picking up Cartography Chips from the neighbouring sector and returning them, with five and a half minutes to do so. Mindful of my desire to mend fences with hostile races I agreed to a (rare for me) non-combat mission for a Paranid customer I ran across. Over the course of the day I captured another five ships, a Raijin Raider, Elite, Discoverer Hauler, Nova Raider, and Scorpion – a good haul I think. Things got off to a good start when two people hired me to defend the same factory, and as an added bonus I captured another Discoverer in the battle. I have visited 46 sectors, completed 15 out of 20 missions, and destroyed 50 ships. I now possess 1,058,101 Cr and am ranked Marksman. I am still hostile with both the Paranid and Borons, although I would like to make peace with the Paranids, if I can work out how. I have some thoughts about working for the Strong Arm corporation, but their HQ is stuck between Paranid and Boron territories so achieving peace with at least one of them first would seem wise. My focus in my first day has been exploration and from my start in Aladna Hill I have traversed the nearby Argon and Teladi sectors, darted through the neighbouring pirate and Boron space before turning north and wandering through Split territory, then east into more Teladi and Argon sectors, finishing in Belt of Aguilar. I met my first Terran (and killed him for money), and the Goners – the great thing about pacifists is that when they need someone who can kill they have to hire them and I took a well paid defence mission with them. A tougher fight was defending a factory against about eight pirate scouts – not particularly dangerous individually, but very fast. Another 'very hard' payday was 221,035 Cr for assisting against a Xenon incursion that was destroyed before I got halfway there. My biggest payday is 304,536 Credits for the head of Nu'Ktt who was found one sector over and died in seconds – not 'very hard' after all. While defending a cattle ranch I make my first (and so far only) capture, a Discoverer, and send it to a shipyard for storage.
Additionally, they will not tell me where the job is before I take it, which is annoying. For some reason no one will give me more than 30 minutes to complete a hit and usually about half that, which, when I need to traverse several sectors, can make the job impossible to complete. From there I move on to defending facilities, try a patrol but do not find them to be to my taste, and the real work – assassinations.
I begin by exploring the local Argon sectors, fighting off bounty hunters after every jump and soon get my first job escorting an OTAS convoy to their headquarters.
Two can play at that game though: My name is O'ren Rock, yesterday I was a successful author, but today I start a new life as a bankrupt assassin. I became a writer instead and my latest work is very popular with certain segments of the population however its portrayal of the Boron Queen and Paranid High Priest did not go down well with their peoples and I have been forced to sell everything I have and buy a Mamba fighter to flee the planet with a bounty on my head that the local pirates are eager to collect. Mama said I should become a humble merchant and make lots of money easily, but that is not who I am. This is my first time playing a game in the X series.
